With arctic temperatures and snow gripping the county of Shropshire the team headed off to the photovoltaic epicentre of the world to undertake a series of large scale intensive training seminars.

As part of Salop Energy's commitment to continued professional development, the advanced training seminars were invaluable for gaining further knowledge and expertise in an area where huge expansion is expected for the UK in 2011.

The tutorials covered advanced design, communication and monitoring of all photovoltaic systems from 10 kW up to large scale solar farm systems of multiple mega watts and was a fantastic learning curve for all that attended. Although we have carried out numerous installations; an in depth understanding of large scale systems and the correct design in setting them to work will help place us at the forefront of this exciting industry next year.

 The seminar also covered the new generation of SMA inverters recently launched in the UK marketplace. The 3,000 4,000 and 5,000 tl, the versatile HF range, and of particular interest for us was the new Tri power series. This inverter simplifies the installation of 3 phase larger photovoltaic systems where multiple inverter applications were previously required. It is extremely good news for clients requiring systems of 10 kW upwards as it not only simplifies and cuts down installation time it also results in reduced costs.

Finally! Some very interesting information given to us by our hosts at SMA was that since the inception of the feed in tariff scheme, Germany now receives 33% of its total power provided by either Photovoltaics or wind turbines.
Photovoltaics we were told is now definitely the favoured option over wind in Germany, which may be a sign of things to come in the UK once the large offshore projects are completed. The reasons given were its reliability and consistent performance.
The phrase "if there is no wind there is no power, if there is no sun we are all in trouble" springs to mind!
